Episode 6 — The Reunion (Sumedh’s POV)
I couldn’t breathe.
The words “arranged marriage” felt like a blade pressed against my throat.
Ji-woo. My Ji-woo. Promised to someone else.
I grabbed Hae-rin’s wrist. “Where is she? Take me to her. Now.”
“Sumedh—” she began, but stopped when she saw the fire in my eyes. She sighed. “Fine. But if you go… nothing will ever be the same again.”
That night, Seoul streets glowed under soft rain. Hae-rin led me to a quiet riverside park.
“She comes here when she wants to be alone,” Hae-rin whispered.
And there she was.
Ji-woo sat on a bench under a lamp, an umbrella resting on her shoulder. She was gazing at the Han River, its waters shimmering with city lights.
For a moment, I just stood there. My legs were heavy, my chest hollow. After all these years, I had imagined this moment a thousand ways. But now that it was real, my courage faltered.
Then—her head turned. Our eyes met.
Her umbrella slipped from her hand.
“...Sumedh?”
Her voice cracked on my name.
I walked toward her, my breath ragged. “Ji-woo…”
And then I was holding her. Seven years of distance crumbled in an instant. Her tears soaked my shirt, my hands trembled as they clutched her tighter.
“You’re here,” she whispered, as if saying it might make me vanish. “You’re really here…”
Minutes passed before we pulled apart. She searched my face, her hand trembling as it touched the scar near my temple.
“I thought… I thought I lost you forever,” she whispered.
“You never lost me,” I said, my voice breaking. “You kept me alive. I heard you. In the dark, in the coma—I heard your voice saying saranghaeyo. That’s why I came back.”
Her lips trembled, but then her expression shifted. Pain. Fear.
“You shouldn’t have come,” she said suddenly, stepping back.
My heart dropped. “What?”
“My family… they’ll never allow us. They blamed you for the accident. They said you distracted me, ruined my future. And when you didn’t wake up… they said it was punishment for choosing you.”
I stared at her, stunned. “Punishment? Ji-woo, it wasn’t our fault. Someone sabotaged that night. Min-jae—”
Her eyes widened. “You remember Min-jae?”
“Fragments. Enough to know it wasn’t chance.”
She shook her head, tears falling again. “Even if that’s true… my family doesn’t care. They’ve already chosen a man for me. A businessman, safe, respectable. If I refuse… they’ll destroy your name in Korea. They’ll call you reckless, dangerous, a scandal.”
I stepped closer, gripping her hands. “Let them say what they want. I don’t care about fame, or reputation. I care about you. About us.”
Her gaze wavered. For a heartbeat, hope flickered in her eyes.
But then… she pulled her hands away.
“You don’t understand, Sumedh. If I stay with you… they’ll ruin you again. And this time… you might not survive it.”
The rain fell harder, blurring the world between us.
And then she whispered the words that shattered me more than any accident ever could:
“Forget me. Please.”
