Episode 9 — Before the Storm (Sumedh’s POV)

The city lights blurred outside the taxi window. My fists were clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms.
Every second felt heavier, knowing Ji-woo was slipping further away into a life she didn’t choose.

I had to see her. One last time—before they caged her completely.

With Hae-rin’s help, I found my way to Ji-woo’s family home. Guards stood near the gate, the house lit like a palace preparing for celebration.

But Ji-woo wasn’t celebrating. She was mourning.

I could feel it.

Hae-rin whispered, “There’s a side entrance to the garden. She goes there at night, to breathe.”

I slipped in, heart hammering. And there she was—dressed in a pale hanbok, her face ghostly under the moonlight. She was arranging flowers for her own wedding.

“Ji-woo,” I whispered.

Her hands froze. Slowly, she turned.

For a moment, silence stretched between us. The air was thick with unsaid words.

“Why are you here?” she whispered. Her voice trembled—not in anger, but in fear.

“Because you don’t want this marriage,” I said firmly. “Because you still love me.”

Her eyes glistened. She shook her head, but the tears betrayed her.

“I told you… it’s too dangerous.”

“I don’t care!” My voice cracked. “I lost seven years of my life, Ji-woo. Seven years stolen from us. I won’t lose you again.”

Her shoulders sagged. And finally, the walls she had built around her heart began to crumble.

“I never stopped loving you,” she whispered. “Not for a day. When you were in the hospital, I prayed every night. I sang to you. I begged you to come back. And when they dragged me away, I wanted to die.”

I stepped closer, my hand cupping her face. “Then come with me. Right now. We’ll run, leave all this behind.”

For a second, I saw it in her eyes—freedom, hope, the dream we once had.

But then her expression hardened. “You don’t understand, Sumedh. It’s not just my family. It’s Min-jae. He’ll destroy you. He already tried once.”

I froze. “You know?”

Her silence was answer enough.

I took her hands, gripping them tight. “Then let him try. Let the whole world try. I’m not afraid anymore. I’d rather die fighting for you than live without you.”

Her tears spilled freely now. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against mine. For a moment, it felt like the world had stopped—just us, like before.

But then she pulled back, trembling.

“Tomorrow is the engagement. If you really love me, don’t come. Please… don’t risk yourself again.”

Her words were desperate, but her eyes… her eyes begged me to fight.

I watched her walk away, disappearing into the house.

And in that moment, I knew.

Tomorrow, I wasn’t staying away.
Tomorrow, I was walking into the storm.
